The refrigerator stopped humming at 6:47 in the morning. That was the first thing Mark Smith noticed, because in a house that has hummed for fifteen years, silence is louder than any alarm. He stood in the kitchen with a coffee mug halfway to his mouth and listened to nothing. No furnace cycling. No wireless router blinking. No distant rumble of I-575 pushing its commuter tide south toward Atlanta. Just the weight of a morning that had quietly come unplugged from the century.
He would remember that silence for the rest of his life. He would remember it because it was the last moment he could still pretend this was an outage.

And somewhere beyond the tree line to the south, forty miles down a highway Mark had driven five days a week for two decades, a city of six million people had already stopped being a city.
