A name on a chalk board is a promise. A blank line is a promise too.
The morning Abigail’s fever broke, Mark Smith took Eli Turner’s chalk and wrote seven lines onto the barn board under twenty-six others. Smith, Smith, Smith, Smith, Reeves, Morris.
And one line with nothing on it, beside a mark for the dog’s floor.
Tonight that board is the only thing on the hill that says who the family is.
