For three hours the dog would not come off the wire.
He stood at the inner fence line with his hackles up and a low sound running under his ribs, his whole hard body aimed at the black stand of timber climbing the ridge behind the camp. They called him in. He did not come. A hand on his collar did not break the line of his stare. Every rifle in Camp Ridge was pointed south that night, at the armored truck squatting on the bend and the men gathering in the trees beyond it, and the one creature looking the other way was a hundred and ten pounds of brindle with no way to say what he saw.
