Henderson was behind something when the round came. That is the part everybody skips.

He had not been careless. He was behind a real thing, a solid-looking thing, the kind any man on that ridge would have picked at a dead run and felt good about picking. It hid him completely. The shooter never saw him and never needed to.

What hid him and what would have stopped that round were two different lists. The ridge did not have the second list written down anywhere.

The round came through it anyway and went through his left thigh with it, and Henderson cinched a belt with his own teeth and told the man coming for him to stay put. Stay put. I know what I am.

Concealment breaks the eye. Cover stops the round. Camp Ridge spent six days learning, item by item, which of their things did which, and they learned it the expensive way because nobody had sorted it in daylight on a quiet Tuesday beforehand…
