FIELD NOTE
A truck that stops where the tracks hit the water is driven by a man who reads.
Four Black Vulture scouts in a plank-sided gray pickup. Two in the bed facing backward. They rolled onto the culvert, got out, read the family’s prints at the south bank, checked a folded sheet, and said seven and a dog.
Then they said they had been told the road and not the creek. And they drove west without searching the trees.
Raiders do not drive like that. Patrols do.
