OPENING HOOK
The dormer across the street is empty now. That should feel like a victory. It doesn’t. What Mark found in that room — spread across the floor of a dead man’s house, left behind in the chaos of a retreat that nobody watched happen — is the kind of evidence that doesn’t comfort you. It reframes everything that came before it and leaves you standing in a cleared room with more questions than you had when you went in.
The second wave doesn’t care about any of that. It arrives the way pressure always arrives in a world stripped of law — without announcement, without negotiation, without the courtesy of waiting until the family has processed what the morning already cost them. The men who now see suburban homes as resource targets are not complicated. They are not altered, not changed by the warheads, not operating outside their own volition. They are making a choice. That is the part that sits differently than everything else.
The Smith family has water now. They have a cleared threat across the street and a new man inside the wire whose skills have already been tested once today. What they do not have is time to breathe, and in EP006 the collapse does not give them any.
