This story is full of so much suspense you can palpate each waking moment. I can only imagine the strain and anxiety that Mark and Sarah Smith are feeling,as their only son Jake forges out on a solo mission of uncertainty,a young and groomed soldier walking out into a world where at any instant, his life can be taken away by the evil forces that lurk in the darkness. What could Pryor's men be planning as they continue to travel and venture out into the wilderness? The battle of good versus evil is being played out in an open arena, where am sure all the surviving members of Camp Ridge hold their breath,as what lies ahead for each and every one of them can be life or death. The plot truly thickens.

Thanks for the explanation. I’m loving the series.

Mark Smith said he was watching what the county taught Jake in 2 winters.

I’m confused. I thought this was the first winter after the sky burned?? Anybody else wondering?

Jake did two winters in the county outdoor program before the sky burned. Hunter ed, land nav, overnight stuff. Mark’s watching those skills get used for real in the first winter after. The training was already on him. The test is new.
