At a fence in October, Mark gave a watcher the same man at the same post until the watcher stopped looking, and moved what mattered through the hours he was not watching.
On a pine ridge above a cut-through road, three men with glass and a pencil were the watcher, and the family was the watched.
So the family gave them a pattern. Then it lived in the gaps.
