What follows is an in-universe document from the world of Remnant. It does not appear in any episode of the podcast. It exists in the timeline of the show — a piece of the world I’ve built that lives just outside the frame.

I’m releasing it because the people who’ve already listened to Episodes 1 and 2 deserve to step further into the world. The Smith family is one thread. There are thousands of other threads happening at the same moment. This is one of them.

Read it the way you’d read a recovered document. Because that’s what it is.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF FEDERAL AND STATE AUTHORITIES. ALL CITIZENS WITHIN THE SOUND OF THIS BROADCAST ARE INSTRUCTED TO LISTEN CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS WITHOUT DELAY.
AT APPROXIMATELY 18:00 EASTERN, MULTIPLE COORDINATED ATTACKS WERE INITIATED AGAINST CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE TARGETS WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES. THE NATURE AND ORIGIN OF THESE ATTACKS IS STILL BEING DETERMINED.
THE FOLLOWING SYSTEMS ARE CONFIRMED OFFLINE OR COMPROMISED:
THE EASTERN INTERCONNECTION POWER GRID. THE TEXAS INTERCONNECTION. SECTIONS OF THE WESTERN INTERCONNECTION. CELLULAR TELECOMMUNICATIONS ACROSS MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREAS. INTERSTATE FUEL DISTRIBUTION. WATER TREATMENT FACILITIES IN AT LEAST ELEVEN STATES.
CITIZENS ARE INSTRUCTED TO SHELTER IN PLACE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REACH FAMILY MEMBERS BY VEHICLE. ROADWAYS ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME IMPASSABLE WITHIN THE NEXT NINETY MINUTES.
SECURE YOUR HOME. SECURE YOUR FAMILY. ACCOUNT FOR FOOD AND WATER ON HAND. PREPARE TO BE WITHOUT POWER FOR A MINIMUM OF SEVENTY-TWO HOURS. FEDERAL AUTHORITIES STRESS THIS ESTIMATE MAY BE OPTIMISTIC.

SECONDARY DEVICES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. REPEAT. SECONDARY DEVICES HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN MULTIPLE METROPOLITAN AREAS. THE NATURE OF THESE DEVICES HAS NOT BEEN OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED.

Folks — I mean — citizens — citizens, this is — I’m being told to stay on the air as long as the signal holds. We don’t know how much time we have. The official guidance is what I just read. But I’m going to add something not in the script.
If you have family with you — hold them. If you have neighbors who don’t know what’s happening — go get them. If you have faith — pray. If you don’t — start.

WHAT THIS DOCUMENT IS

This transcript was found in the personal archive of a recovered shortwave radio operator, weeks after the events. The original broadcast almost certainly went out to tens of millions of Americans in the final hours before the eastern grid went dark. Most of those people never heard it — by 18:47 local, vehicle radios in major metros were already losing signal as transmission towers failed.

The young announcer at the end is not named in the recovered records.

His final words were edited out of the official federal archive before it was destroyed in the months that followed. They survive only because a private citizen with a battery-powered shortwave was recording when the broadcast went out.

That’s how a lot of things survived in the months that followed. Private citizens. Battery power. People who paid attention before they had to.

WHY I’M SHARING THIS

I wrote this transcript to put you inside the world of Remnant the way the Smith family experienced it. Not from above. Not from a narrator’s distance. From inside the moment when the country crossed the line.

Most Americans alive today have never heard a real Emergency Alert System message that wasn’t a test. They’ve never sat in their living room and listened to a government broadcaster lose his composure on the air. They’ve never had to make the decisions the Smith family makes in Episodes 1 and 2.

The whole point of Remnant is to put you in those moments before they actually happen. Because when they do, the people who’ve rehearsed in their minds — even through a story — are the ones who move. Everyone else freezes.

WHAT THE SMITHS HEARD

In the world of Remnant, the Smith family heard a version of this broadcast on Mark’s truck radio while he was driving home from work. He pulled over on the side of the road. He listened to it twice. He thought about Sarah. He thought about the kids. He thought about the bag in his trunk.

Then he made a decision.

What that decision was — and what it cost — is the story we’re telling.
