FIELD NOTE

A rifle that fires one time and never fires again is still working.

The man in the timber above Camp Ridge spent four rounds across the whole of last week. Four. The camp spent none. The ridge won that exchange on ammunition and lost the week anyway, and every soul on that ground knew it by Wednesday.

The rifle was never about the rounds. One shot, placed once, told a hundred and three people where they were allowed to walk. After that it could sit cold under a crown of deadfall and go on collecting.

EP020 releases this weekend . Part 1 Sat. Part 2 Sun.

Season 1 runs two parts to an episode. Paid subscribers get each part the day it drops. Free subscribers wait a week.

The field note continues below for paid subscribers.

INSIDE THIS FIELD NOTE

What a week of being pinned actually costs a camp that never fired back, and how Camp Ridge paid it.

It collected on the water run. On the wood line at dusk. On the walk out to the outbuilding, and on the open ground between the bay door and everything a camp of that size needs to stay a camp.

Watch what a place does when it starts paying that tax, because it does not look like a siege. It looks like housekeeping….
