Sealed CarniVault freeze dried meat on plates

The morning came up gray over Camp Ridge and the guns did not stop for it.

All night the camp held. It held the fold and it held the wash and it sealed the corner seam twice at close range, and it did all of it by the count, one round at a time, because Eleanor Briggs had written four words in her book before the fight was even over. Ration fire at gray light. The camp fought its way to morning and morning brought no relief, only better light to see the field by, and the field was full of men who had spent a whole night learning this place and were not finished.

This is the last episode of Season One. Everything the camp built through a hard winter, the walls, the lanes cut into the ground, the false works raised shovel by shovel, the drills run in the dark until fear turned into a job, all of it comes due on one morning. A defended position can hold a long time. It cannot hold forever against an enemy that keeps books and reloads out of a full yard, and the people inside those walls know it, and they fight anyway, because the alternative is the country outside the wire and they have seen what lives there.

What breaks first, and what it costs when it does, is the whole of the finale. The camp has run out of night to hide in.
