The singing stopped on half a word, and Camp Ridge came to its feet in the dark.

That is where the county left them. One hundred and eight souls standing to in the frost, walls awake, children moving to the church, a map of the enemy’s loaded yard open on the table with the pencil still touching it. The camp has been counted, surveyed, sold, priced, and read its own census over a dead band. It has answered with shovels and discipline and one boy’s page, and it holds, tonight, the closest thing to an upper hand it has ever held.

The county has been patient for a season. Patience was never mercy. It was scheduling.

What comes out of the treeline when this silence ends is everything the camp has spent three months preparing for, and everything it prayed it was wrong about. The walls, the works, the protocols, the people. All of it gets asked the same question on the same night, at scale, and no drill answers for the real thing.

The camp built for this. Now it finds out what that sentence was worth.
