Sarah walked into a stranger’s count, put her own bowl in her son’s hands, and said one word.
The young men were stood ten feet from the family at the noon meal. Told nothing. Counted. Jake’s hand came up off his side, and every rifle on that ground saw it.
It was not Mark who moved. It was his wife.
She crossed the ten feet past a Warden, put her own bowl in the boy’s hands, laid her hand flat on his chest, and said, eat.
