At first light, the band came back.
It came back the way it went away, all at once, every channel, check-ins on the hour and the long lazy operator down the corridor keying like the world never ended. As if the whole width of it had not sat dead through the middle of the night. As if a flat voice had not spoken one word into that silence and left it hanging over a camp full of sleepless rifles. The men at the gatehouse bench listened to the enemy’s morning traffic run like nothing happened, and understood that nothing happened is the most dangerous report there is. Silence that ends without an attack was not mercy. It was cover. Something moved in the dark hours, and it is out there now, and the band chattering along like a party line is the enemy’s way of saying prove it.
