The pencil has stopped on the page, and thirty people are standing in the cold to watch what happens next.
The Smith family made it across the river. That was supposed to be the hard part. Now they are standing on the far bank inside the River Wardens’ settlement, under a barn lantern, in front of a table with an open book on it, and the man behind the book has just heard their name and looked up at Jonah Pike instead of writing it down. Two Wardens are one step from Jake. The rifles that were slung for two days are not slung anymore.
There is a price for crossing this river, and it turns out the price was never the water.
This week the family finds out what a crossing fee looks like when the men collecting it do not want your food. They want you to stand in front of their people and do as you are told, and they want to write down who you are, what you can do, and whether anybody is looking for you. Mark Smith has to decide how to pay that with his son a step from a rifle line and his own name already on the page.
What the book is really for, and what it costs a family to be in it, is the whole of this episode.
