The Smith-Moon truck is forty yards into a gravel lane and the dog has not breathed since the trees closed in.
Casey is rigid against Emily’s hand. Lips back from his teeth, no sound, every muscle in his 110-pound body locked on a point in the tree line that none of the nine people in the truck can see. The lane runs another forty yards before it opens into Camp Ridge — the camp John Moon walked alone an hour earlier and came back with a readout that included a former pastor named Calloway, a seven-day probationary protocol, and a name the Smiths already knew from spray paint on the back wall of a Stop-N-Go in Canton. The Black Vultures.
The man at the gate told John that two altered individuals had come to the camp in the past four days. One of them made it inside the perimeter before they figured out what he was. The other was stopped at the gate, and the man who stopped him was the man at the gate.
The dog is right. The threat in the tree line is not at the gate. It is here now. It is between the truck and the camp, and it has been watching them come in.
