Jake had the low man in his sights, untold, and Mark did not say his name.
A name said across a quarter mile of still pine is a sound. A boy with his cheek on a stock does not hear it anyway. He hears the breath he is holding.
So Mark crawled ten feet through the needles, closed his hand on the back of his son’s knee, and shook his head once.
The stock came off the boy’s cheek. Nobody fired.
