The radios have been dead for a night and a day, and Camp Ridge knows what its own doctrine says about that. When the county goes quiet, something is arriving. Into that silence, a hundred and three people send their strongest backs two miles northeast in the dark, because an abandoned farmstead holds weeks of sealed food, and winter does not negotiate. The cache was named weeks ago, back when it was a someday. The siege made it unreachable. The siege broke. The someday is tonight.
Hope is the bait in this one. A full larder in a collapsed county is the best thing that has happened to the camp since eleven children came through the wire alive, and it is exactly the kind of best thing the county uses. Big finds carry owners, or watchers, or a cost that has not introduced itself yet. Mark Smith wants the retrieval slow and controlled. Other voices want volume and speed before the window shuts. Both sides are right, and that is the danger, because greed does its finest work dressed as prudence and fear does its finest work dressed as discipline.
The farmstead has its own story to tell, read in sign, in what was left and what was not. And what the camp’s best tracker reads at the cache site goes quietly into the ledger of things this county will not explain. Then comes the freight. A cache is worth what you can move and protect and nothing else, and the carry turns treasure into a logistics problem with rifles on it, a night column strung out between the find and home with half the camp’s future strapped to its backs. That is the exact moment the county picks to end its silence.
