UNLOCK REMNANT

OPENING HOOK

The smoke came before the flames.

Not the clean gray wisps of a campfire — thick, black, chemical smoke rolling low across the cul-de-sac and pressing through every gap in the windows the Smiths had worked for days to seal. The house two doors down was gone before most of the neighborhood understood what was happening. By the time the fire had eaten through the roof and begun crawling sideways along the fence line, the decision to stay was no longer Mark’s to make. The fire had made it for him.

This is what collapse does. It waits until you are tired, until you have invested everything in a position, until home feels like the last solid thing left in the world — and then it removes the option. The Smiths have spent seven days hardening that house, feeding from it, sleeping inside it, grieving inside it. They have bled for it. And now the block is filling with smoke, the neighbors who are still alive are running, and somewhere in the chaos something far worse than fire is moving.

The world does not stop threatening while you are trying to save what you have.
