Pike’s four sick were the price of the crossing. Reeves and Sarah worked them three days with a wound kit and a basin. One child sat up and drank and walked to the stove on her own.
The other died on the second night, and they buried her downstream past the last shelter, on the same path the paper took.
The clerk opened the book and drew one short line.
