OPENING HOOK
The neighborhood looks almost normal that morning. Almost. The grass is still cut. The mailboxes still stand at the ends of the driveways. The sky is the wrong color, but if you don’t look up, you can almost convince yourself that the worst of it is behind you. That’s the lie the eye wants to tell. The Smith family is about to learn what that lie costs.
Three houses down, a man is standing at his mailbox. He has been standing there for a long time. He is not opening anything. He is not holding anything. He is not moving. From the front window of the Smith house, Emily is the first to notice that his head is tilted at an angle a person doesn’t tilt their head, and that he hasn’t shifted his weight once in the four minutes she’s been watching.
She doesn’t say anything dramatic. She just sets down her sketchpad and says, quietly, “Mom. Something’s wrong with Mr. Halverson.”
