Sealed CarniVault freeze dried meat on plates

The drifter fixes the gate hinge before anybody asks him to.

He walked up the middle of the county road with the enemy’s radios two days dead all around him, one man, no flag, hands empty, and when the wall challenged him he stood in the open frost and let the camp look at him for as long as looking took. Now he crouches at the gate with a borrowed screwdriver and a bent hinge pin, and the pin comes true under his hands like it wanted to, and every rifle watching him understands the sales pitch without a word of it being spoken. A man who can fix things, in a county where everything is broken.

Camp Ridge has buried six men who came at it shooting and fed four strangers who came to it honest, all inside one week. It knows what flags buy and what washes hide. What it has never faced is the other kind of visitor. The useful kind. The kind that does not test your walls.

The kind that tests your judgment. And the price of failing that test is not posted anywhere until it is owed.
