Two men came up from the county road to the west edge of the strip three times, days apart, before the Smiths reached Mercy Ridge. Same boots each time. They stood where the roof could see them and went back down.
One of them knelt every time. Morris read the mark. A man writing on his knee.
The other side knows what it is doing.
