A folded sheet with their names on it went into the trees, and somebody took it.
The family watched it go. A clerk copied their page by candlelight, Pike knotted it into an oilcloth pouch, and a young man in a wool cap walked it downstream along a worn path and did not come back that day.
When he came back three mornings later, his coat was flat.
Now: On a road west, written down, and the writing got there first.
