FIELD NOTE
The road west runs out at a river that has come up over its banks, and there are men standing on the far side of it with rifles.
Not a mob. Not the county. Men with posts and rules and a line they have drawn across the only way through, standing on it the way people stand on ground they own. The Smith family came down the abandoned county road expecting a washed-out bridge and empty country beyond it. What they find instead is the first organized thing they have met since the walls came down, and it is not offering help.
Season Two of Survival Dispatch Remnant opens here. Camp Ridge is behind them and burning. The country ahead does not belong to them and never did. And the thing Mark Smith is about to learn on the bank of that river is that survival stopped being about food and water somewhere back on the road, and became about who controls the crossing and who has the guns to make you pay for it.
He has a family, a few rifles, and supplies that will not last a long argument. The men across the water have time.
