OPENING HOOK

The water ran out before the courage did. That is how it always goes — the body makes the decision long before the mind is ready to accept it, and by the time the Smith family understands they have no real choice left, the choice has already been made for them. The dormer across the street is still occupied. Whatever watched them through that window the night before did not leave with the dark, and the family cannot afford one more morning pretending otherwise.

Staying is a threat. Leaving is a threat. In the world that replaced the old one, those two facts simply coexist, and the people who survive long enough to matter are the ones who learn to move anyway.

What nobody tells you about collapse — what no amount of planning or preparation fully communicates until the moment arrives — is that the predators reorganize faster than the survivors do. While ordinary people are still processing loss, still trying to locate their footing in a world that no longer has rules, the men who were always going to do this are already in position. They know where thirst sends people. They know what desperation looks like from a distance. They have been patient, and patience in this world is a weapon.
