The strangers come up the county road at midday carrying a white pillowcase tied to a walking stick.
Four of them. Thin coats, thinner faces, hands held away from their bodies the way people walk when they know rifles are watching, and they stop at the fence line a quarter mile out and wait. They do not shout. They plant the stick in the frost and stand beside it, patient as a bill coming due, and up on the wall the watch counts them twice and passes the word inside, and Camp Ridge learns the first hard lesson of its new wealth. Nineteen days of siege and nobody came asking. The larder fills, and inside a week the road produces four polite people with a flag.
Word travels in a collapsed county. That is the whole problem, and what these four want, what they offer, and what they carry back down that road when the trading is done will cost the camp more than any price on Briggs’s plank table. The gate has not even opened yet, and the bill is already running.
