For two weeks the enemy on Route Five has looked like appetite with numbers, raiders massing, watching, waiting. That reading dies on the ridge. A shooter who works alone above a defended position, who reads angles and habits and fear, who fires once and lets the silence do the pressing, is not a raider. He is doctrine. And he answers a question that has hung over the story for three episodes: the night the entire enemy band went dead across every channel, something moved forward in the dark, and some of it moved up, into the high timber, and settled in.
