One rifle shot out of the wooded ridge above Camp Ridge, and the camp’s whole world changes shape. Not a raid. Not a probe. One precise round, placed by somebody who understands exactly what a single bullet does to a defended camp: it turns every open lane into a question, every silhouette into a wager, and every routine crossing of the yard into a decision that has to be earned. The shot is over in a heartbeat. The circle it draws around Camp Ridge does not close.

For two weeks the enemy on Route Five has looked like appetite with numbers, raiders massing, watching, waiting. That reading dies on the ridge. A shooter who works alone above a defended position, who reads angles and habits and fear, who fires once and lets the silence do the pressing, is not a raider. He is doctrine. And he answers a question that has hung over the story for three episodes: the night the entire enemy band went dead across every channel, something moved forward in the dark, and some of it moved up, into the high timber, and settled in. The answer to the dead band arrives through a rifle scope.

Worse: he is not shooting at everything he can see. He is passing up targets a raider would take, easy ones, daily ones, and waiting with a professional’s patience on one particular silhouette, the one name the whole enemy band spoke into the dark. Now the camp has to find one hidden man on a wooded ridge without feeding him what he came for, the pattern-readers working the problem from the bench while the young men carry the exposure, and Mark Smith learns the hardest tactical truth a father can be handed: the safest thing he can do for his son is let him go, under another man’s plan, inside another rifle’s reach.
